About David
An early interest in money
Born in the Netherlands, ever since I was a young boy, I was obsessed with the concept of money. I collected coins and gave my first school presentation on the history of money. I even wanted to become a banker after I had heard bankers could create money.
As a teenager I became interested in flying. Spending hours playing Flight Simulator, I dreamt I could travel all over the world as an airline pilot one day.
I saw money destroy dreams
In 2006 my parents sold their house in the Netherlands to retire early in the French countryside. But when the 2008 Global Financial Crisis hit, they lost their money in the stock market and ended up getting jobs again. The financial stress in my family had a big impact on me.
To make matters worse, the job market for pilots had plummeted. Slightly disillusioned, I decided to pursue an engineering degree instead of a pilot license.
Changing course
Once I understood Bitcoin solves one of the biggest problems on Earth, I decided to dedicate myself towards accelerating its adoption
Clueless about the problem, I didn’t recognize Bitcoin as the solution
When Bitcoin first crossed my path in 2011, I didn’t take it seriously. I thought Bitcoin was just another internet project, grossly underestimating its potential.
It took multiple touchpoints across 6 years before I really started to learn about Bitcoin. Thanks to my engineering training, I quickly figured out how Bitcoin worked. Making sense of the financial system and its problems was a much bigger challenge. This eventually inspired me to create my free course.
I helped build the most popular Bitcoin wallet in the world
To help spread Bitcoin adoption, I joined Ledger in Paris in 2018 where I worked for over three years. As a writer and customer support lead, I helped a broad customer base secure and use their bitcoin. I later joined the product team where I helped improve the ease of use and functionality of the wallet.
It was during my time at Ledger that I discovered a bigger mission was waiting for me. I felt I had no other choice but to focus all my energy on providing 100% Bitcoin education.
My new mission
I launched My Bitcoin Academy to provide financial education to thousands of people around the world, accelerating Bitcoin’s adoption to create a more prosperous and peaceful society.
